This man should have been more careful about who he thought was in and who he thought was out.
Matthew makes it quite clear in chapter 7 that those who thought they were in were not. They were sincerely spiritual people who prophesied, cast out devils and did many wonderful works, all in the name of Jesus. Jesus’ interpretation of their religious activity was that they were in fact works of iniquity.
Later in Matthew there comes another surprise, this time to people who assume they are out but in fact are in. In chapter 25 Jesus tells them that when they clothed the naked, took care of the sick and visited prisoners, they were in fact ministering to the body of Jesus.
Interesting, isn’t it, that specifically religious/ spiritual/ theological activity can be evil, and that specifically secular and normal humane activity is commended? In fact, it goes even further: religion, spirituality and theology can be an actual rejection of Jesus; and secular, non-religious and non-spiritual activity can in fact be a direct blessing to the actual body of Jesus.
The Z-Theory, which I have been silent about for a while, reflects this (type “z-theory” into my search box to read more). The Spirit, the unfolding of the now Manifested and Incarnated Fullness over all the earth, is the forgiveness, reconciliation and love that is exercised between all beings. The Spirit is not “out there”, occasionally adorning our religious and spiritual and theological activity, but is the love and unity exercised among us actually.
