(Actually, this cartoon or t-shirt idea is not perfect because Paul said there is neither male nor female in Christ. But this will do for now.) I claim that the more dissenting an opposing group becomes, the more fundamentalist the group in power becomes. This is why we are witnessing the simultaneous growth of radical dissent and radical fundamentalism. If you’re keeping up with the rapid daily reports, you must agree this is happening with women in the church. I... Read more

You’ve heard the story, haven’t you, of the white supremacist Craig Cobb being informed on TV that his DNA test reveals he is 14% African. He refused to believe it or fist bump the host and went down some conspiracy theory road. We talk a lot about atheism in our online community because many of us are atheists or are struggling with it. I claim that those who always profess they always believe are either always lying or always living... Read more

There is an online theological conference taking place right now called The Nines. Out of 120 speakers, only 4 are women. That’s about 2%. Rachel Held Evans had something to say about that in Twitter but was slapped down at the speed of light. So when a woman protests it’s called a meltdown. And Stephanie Drury has skills in pointing out the hypocrisy. Sometimes I wonder if we’ve found reverse. Purchase the original drawing of this cartoon. Read more

My experience of That-Which-We-Call-God is in the human collective. When Jesus died, he promised that the Spirit would follow and that the human collective would be him. Where two or three are gathered there am I! Which is what makes sense of Paul’s claim that Jesus questioned: “Why do you persecute me?” In other words, Paul’s cataclysmic revelation was Jesus said, “I am the people!” Period! Our online community, The Lasting Supper, is my experience of That-Which-We-Call-God. I invite you... Read more

At what point do the accretions cause the deletions? I just had to say that cuz it sounds like a Pentecostal preacher! It means: At what point do the additions to Jesus leave Jesus behind? I’ve been watching Preachers of L.A.. I actually find the pastors and their wives endearing. Listen… I totally get this show. I spent many years in Pentecostalism and went to a Pentecostal bible college where I met my Pentecostal wife. I was also in the... Read more

Whenever a theologian or preacher says, “You’re going to be surprised when you get to Heaven”, I often wonder if they think that about themselves. This cartoon isn’t about whether there is a God or not, or whether or not this God is male or female, or whether or not there is a heaven. It is about whether or not the prominent preachers and theologians of our day consider the possibility that they might be wrong or only partially right... Read more

Some time ago I wrote a post that became very popular, Why I Wouldn’t Attend Pastor Steepek’s Church. But it became popular for the wrong reasons. I was alarmed at the response. Actually, saddened. The overwhelming reaction was that it is not only legitimate but necessary and even divine to use shame to motivate church members. I used to think that spiritual abuse was happening enough to be a concern. Now I think it is prevalent. My conclusion: the church... Read more
