Actually, I do talk with fundamentalists. But always, at some point, they start sounding biblical, and then I know I’ve lost them. You know the feeling. It’s like you’re talking with a person when all of a sudden they start sounding like a book. So, it’s not that I don’t talk with a fundamentalist. It’s that I’m actually talking with a bible that’s taken possession of a human body and its brain. It is a defense tactic, a bunker position, a... Read more

A post has been circulating around the web, “Helping Little Hearts Overcome Sin” about how to raise children. I want to say that it is obvious we have a seriously devoted parent here. She wants to raise her kids well. She clearly loves her children. It’s a scary world out there, and the fear it may cause can be overwhelming. Lisa and I have raised three children who are now adults. Sometimes I think I would never ever want to... Read more

CBN has already yanked the video in which Robertson claimed that gays were intentionally spreading HIV/AIDS with rings designed to cut their victims when they shook hands. You can read the story here. Robertson issued a non-apology, which seem to be getting increasingly popular these days: “I regret that my remarks had been misunderstood, but this often happens because people do not listen to the context of remarks which are being said.” When I first saw the story, I thought,... Read more

I’m not a politician. I’m not even very political. Nor am I a political cartoonist. This cartoon is about a reality I’ve observed in human nature: if force is an option we allow then the temptation to use it will be at times overwhelming. Like this cartoon illustrates, it doesn’t matter if someone gets the order to engage or not. Once the idea is launched, how far behind is the weapon? Have you heard of the dramatic principle of Chekhov’s... Read more

Right out of the gate I want to assure you that I’m not judging Miley Cyrus or Robin Thicke in this cartoon and post. This cartoon is about us, not them. I’m sure Cyrus doesn’t mind the press. Actually, before this ever happened they were saying, “Let’s do something people will NEVER forget!” And they did. Mission accomplished. I don’t feel sorry for Cyrus. She’ll make mistakes like the rest of us, but she’s a smart, savvy, talented woman. What... Read more

The church, like all institutions are tempted, will harm people in order to achieve its goals. Have you heard of the castrato? It is a man who was castrated before he reached puberty in order to keep that special high voice unique for boys in church choirs. As an adult, now with unusual lung capacity due to elongated bones and ribs from the lack of testosterone, as well as intensive training, the voice of the castrato is incomparable. You can... Read more

Before I share my thoughts behind this cartoon, I want to explain where the thoughts for the post came from. Bear with me. Some of you may already know that I moderate an online community called The Lasting Supper. What happens over there is we have “Meet a Member” podcasts as well as podcasts addressing issues. We run a forum that is full of stories and resources. We have informative videos. We have a private Facebook group that’s very interactive.... Read more

My cartoon and post yesterday, “The Modesty Purity Movement and Our Sacrificial Virgins” received a lot of attention from both sides of the camp. Read the comments to see what I mean. From the literature propagating the internet lately it appears to me that women have three choices: they can be a slut, a virgin or a wife. In a lot of what I read a woman is defined by her sex and her relationship to men. Either she’s had... Read more

The modesty and purity movement is both fascinating and frightening. When people start talking about purity, someone must die. The cry for cleansing conjures up suggestions of genocide. It reminds me of Rwanda. Read René Girard. Religion was necessary in the development of human evolution to control violence by imputing guilt onto the scapegoat. I suggest this exposes the failure of religion because we continue to create, despise and ignore our victims at an ever-increasing rate. Thabiti Anyabwile’s blog is “Pure... Read more
