We never cease to amaze me. When I read that some Christians are praying for the famously outspoken atheist Christopher Hitchens to die, well… we never cease to amaze me. He is dying of esophageal cancer. I created this indisputable cartoon as a reminder to all of us… all of us… that all paths lead to the grave. I know what happens after that is where the guns start firing. And, for the record, I don’t believe in the god... Read more

This doesn’t always necessarily happen all the time. But it does happen most of the time. I heard from 6 different people yesterday who have experienced this very phenomenon. When someone decides or discovers they don’t fit the group’s norm and pronounce it, a subtle separation occurs. The red represents the embarrassment or even the deep sense of shame the person feels when they experience alienation from the group. It does take a lot of courage to examine oneself, know... Read more

One of my favorite passages is “Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me” (Psalm 42: 7). Again, the girl shows up in my images lately. The large loons have rescued her from the depths. But they are creatures of the depths themselves. They dive deeply. Which is where they found her. She... Read more

The most mature spiritual person can actually seem to be the most childlike. There is a confusing enigmatic character to the spiritual life in general. But when you gather different spiritual lives in one community, the anomaly compounds exponentially. Community life should feel paradoxical. Especially the religious community life. The healthiest churches might actually appear to be the least healthy. This because diversity is more valuable as a sign of health than homogeneity. In my experience, homogeneity is usually forced... Read more

Buy a fine art print of this cartoon. It’s all a matter of perspective. Sometimes we think that because we are getting so much attention we must be special, when in fact it might only mean we require more attention. Click on the image for a larger picture. I find myself talking with people who, because they don’t attend a church anymore, or their beliefs have taken a radical left turn, or they have entered a very dark cloud of unknowing, speak as though they are disqualified. They think and talk as though their decision to make an independent stand has expelled them from some kind of club that therefore expels them from its privileges. The privileges that matter. The infinite ones. My mission, should I choose to... Read more

I’m starting a new line of cartoons. I’m going to call them comics just to separate the two genres. My “cartoons” are going to mostly be “insider” cartoons with a religious and spiritual focus. My comics are going to be my “outsider” cartoons dealing with issues outside of the church, such as politics, the environment, culture, justice, etc. I’m simply categorizing these new ones as comics because my daily cartoon gets sent out by mail to all my newsletter members... Read more

Buy a print of this. This image reminds me of a recurring nightmare I had when I was growing up: I had to carry a gigantic weight, like a globe, on my back, descend dark stairs into the basement, and appear before an austere panel of judges. It was always terrifying. I have some understanding of what it means now. I am aware that this dynamic is still at work in my life. Jesus is before an austere panel of... Read more
