I’ve been doing a little bit of reading on the controversial Bishop Pike of California (1913-1969). I had done some research, then found an old copy of William Stringfellow and Anthony Towne, The Death and Life of Bishop Pike, a strange journey through Pike’s marriages, his struggles with the Anglican Church, his heresy trials, his preoccupation with the origins of Christianity and the historical Jesus, the suicide of his son James and his subsequent obsession with the occult as he... Read more

I read Aravind Adiga’s dark novel, The White Tiger. Here’s Publishers Weekly‘s synopsis of the story: A brutal view of India’s class struggles is cunningly presented in Adiga’s debut about a racist, homicidal chauffer. Balram Halwai is from the Darkness, born where India’s downtrodden and unlucky are destined to rot. Balram manages to escape his village and move to Delhi after being hired as a driver for a rich landlord. Telling his story in retrospect, the novel is a piecemeal... Read more

Even though Jesse is 20 years old, he’s still our baby. I always used to think that once your kids grew up and left home that all your worries were over. I learned fast that isn’t the case at all. In fact, there problems and issues become more serious and worrisome. It is sad to see a vibrant, active and healthy young man laid up like this. They’ve finally moved Jesse to an internal medicine ward where doctors are more... Read more

This is an old cartoon I did a year ago. It’s one of my personal favorites. Even though I do simple black and white drawing with a basic black pen and sometimes some color, this captures for me how I’m feeling lately. Sometimes I just feel like I’m at the mercy. Fear and tears. But at the same time I feel there is a sympathy, an understanding, a compassion at work. Read more

I’ve never downloaded a ringtone. But, like Chris Rock says in his latest comedy routine, Kill the Messenger, one day the phone companies are going to buy the ringtone companies and make us pay for a ringtone. When we buy our cellphones they won’t ring until we buy a ringtone. We’d have to guess when they ring. Hilarious! I have tinitus, so my hearing decreases at certain frequencies. I pick ringtones native to my iPhone that offend my friends and... Read more

I hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day today. Be loved. Love. Find someone to love. Stir romance. Kiss someone. Lisa and I are planning on kissing each other later and saying “Happy Valentine’s Day” while we are in the hospital with Jesse. He’s still very sick. We love him. We hug and kiss him. We’ll wish him a Happy Valentine’s Day. We wish we could give him his request: a full-blown turkey dinner with Lisa’s famous stuffing and Alabama... Read more

I believe that the institution is one of the favorite embodiments for the principalities and powers. I’ve seen it here in the hospital like I’ve seen it in the church as well as other institutions we all are in contact with, such as the Government, the Post Office, Banks, Education, Law, the Family, the Army, etc… Although most institutions would say, “We are here for you!”, this isn’t necessarily true. Although this might be their stated reason for existence, this... Read more
