Book VII (from Exhortations to Himself)
1. What is bad? You have seen a lot of badness. Whatever happens, keep that in mind: you have seen a lot of badness. Everywhere, we see in our houses and in our cities the same things that have filled the history books. The old times and our times, bad is nothing new. Everything that happens is both familiar and short-lived.
2. How can your principles die unless your thoughts die? It is in your power to fan those flames. As long as I can think my thoughts, why am I worried? The things outside my mind do not affect my mind. Stand up and remember this: You have the power to recover your life. Look at things as you once looked at them. That is the way back.
