by Malcolm X and Alex Haley

When I was in grade school growing up in Miami, during Black History, I don’t ever recall hearing anything about Malcolm X. It wasn’t until 1992 when people were wearing hats with an X on the front that made me inquire ‘what the X stood for?’ That inquiring lead me to The Autobiography of Malcolm X. The next year I saw The Quran for the first time and read it, and the next year I took my shahada. The biggest impact Alex Haley’s book has had on my life, and the lives of so many brothers I know is that it was the starting point of me coming to Islam. After growing up never hearing about Malcolm X, I was honored to tell my children about his great legacy while they were still young.

May Allah reward El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) for giving me dawah about Islam from the grave.
