Why does the prevailing form of hegemonic femininity continue to oppress the rights of Muslim women? Sociological theories of assimilation suggest that the education system is one of the primary sources of acculturation. That being said, this seems to be an example of “coerced acculturation” of the ideals associated with Western, American womanhood and beauty. Furthermore, diversity awareness should be integrated into the curriculum at school, not only when it’s convenient or when discrimination occurs. It is a measure of prevention not a consequence of intolerable actions.
