Friday

Which path do you take when you’re at a crossroads? Do I keep this job or look for another one? Do I add this to my calendar or protect what I already have? Do I invest in this friendship or pull away? Is this the person I’m supposed to marry? What’s the right way to parent my child through this crisis? All of these decisions are crossroads. When you’re at a crossroads, where do you look for guidance (honestly, now)?

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;

    ask for the ancient paths,

ask where the good way is, and walk in it,

    and you will find rest for your souls. Jeremiah 6:16

When we’re at a crossroads, we have a choice. Do we choose the easy path, the one carved out smooth by the feet of society? Do we follow the blazing neon signs conveniently provided by our culture to tell us what our “rights” are, what’s expected of us as good 21st century citizens? Do we hear the beck and call of so many others lure us down a path clearly marked out for us?

Or do we look for the ancient path? Do we look for the rough hewn path, seemingly overgrown from lack of use? This path is rocky, this path is hard, this path is less traveled. It’s easy to see why so many people take the other path. But as believers, we’re called to search for the ancient path. We’re called to seek ancient wisdom for modern problems. When presented with a problem, our first solution shouldn’t be to ask Siri or Google. It should be to open the timeless truth of God in Scripture and find the good way forward.

If you’re brave enough to walk the ancient paths, “you will find rest for your souls.” The invitation is yours. If you’re currently at a crossroads, which path will you take?
