Why is Finding God Harder Than Finding Waldo?

These pictures were the bane of my existence growing up. I would spend what seemed like an eternity (or 87 seconds, whichever is shorter) looking at these pictures trying to find Waldo. Why does he even hide in the first place? Why would I even want to find him? These were the futile questions I asked myself until I finally found him and had that existential experience that one only has when you find something you’re desperately looking for. I found Waldo!

So why is it easier to find Waldo sometimes than it is to find God? If God is all around us, if his Holy Spirit is in all believers, then why don’t we encounter him more? Why does he even want to stay hidden? Why doesn’t he reveal himself to the world? Why is it so hard for even believers to have a close encounter with God?
