This very well may be the most important sermon series I’ve preached since coming to Mt Vernon Church. In most evangelical circles, the Holy Spirit is someone mystical and unknown. We neglect him from a combination of apathy, self-reliance, and a fear of turning into a crazy charismatic.
And yet in the book of Acts the Holy Spirit is mentioned fifty-five different times. Just a cursory reading of the early church in Acts would reveal that the church was entirely dependent upon the Holy Spirit. In fact, the Holy Spirit, working through the church, was what propelled the church to turn its world upside down.
The evangelical church of today is declining on many fronts while we neglect the work and power of the Holy Spirit. Coincidence? I think not. If you’re an evangelical reading this, you’re probably a little nervous right about now. Why is that? Why are we so afraid of the working of the Holy Spirit?
Over the next five weeks, we’ll delve into some of the critical issues concerning the Holy Spirit, and how we can see the Holy Spirit use Mt Vernon Church to turn our world upside down:
- The absolute importance of the Holy Spirit to the church
- Why evangelicals are so afraid/negligent of the Holy Spirit
- The purpose of the Holy Spirit in the church
- How the Holy Spirit works in the church
- What the power of the Holy Spirit actually looks like in the church
- The gifts (including miraculous) of the Holy Spirit
- The filling of the Holy Spirit
In Acts 17:6, the early church was described as turning the world “upside down.” That’s what I want for Mt Vernon church. The key isn’t better programs, better buildings, or better activities. The key is the full power and filling of the Holy Spirit in the church. Don’t miss Mt Vernon during the month of June. See you there!
