Enchanted Firestarter Recipe for Samhain

October is my favorite time of year, filling me with inspiration. Samhain is my favorite holiday, and I’ve got no shortage of ideas on how to celebrate. This year we are finally hosting a party (in advance, but still) and I’m quite excited. One of the gifts I’m giving to those who attend is an Enchanted Firestarter.

Samhain is the witch’s new year, so it’s the perfect time to call in all the blessings we desire. For those I love, I desire that they be blessed endlessly with all good things. As such, I’ve chosen each ingredient with care and enchanted it all with the help of my ancestors and the help of Hekate for good health, prosperity, abundance, great luck, success, joy, love, protection, and happiness for those that I love. They smell heavenly too, so it’s a great addition to any bonfire. 

Firestarter Supplies

• These firestarters are easy to make, they only require a bit of patience and the following supplies:
• 2 cups of beeswax pellets
• Paper cupcake liners
• Cupcake pan
• Double boiler
• Candle wicks or twine
• Cinnamon (you can use whole sticks or ground)
• Nutmeg
• Allspice
• Clove pieces
• Star Anise
• Ground coffee
• Bay Leaves

Firestarter Tips and Getting Started

The whole thing is designed to burn. I had some candle wicks on hand from my old candle making days. I snipped the metal ends off and then cut the wicks in half so they were about four inches long. If you use twine or string you’ll want to coat it in the beeswax. 

Set your intentions and cleanse your space. Ground yourself. Be specific about what is desired. Speak it aloud and ask your ancestors to lend their energies to your work. 

Melt the wax pellets in the double boiler. Put the cupcake liners in the pan and fill them about ¼ of the way with any ground ingredients. I used ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground allspice, and ground coffee here. The coffee is an offering to the recipients’ ancestors, so that when it’s burned, their ancestors receive an offering to support them.

Finishing Your Firestarter

Once the beeswax is melted fully, pour it over the herb mixture (about 2-3 tablespoons) so that it just covers the herbs. Then push the wick down to the bottom of each cupcake liner. If you’re using wicks like me, I folded mine in half and pushed the ends down so that there are two wicks in each liner for a faster burn. 

Decorate the top with the rest of your whole ingredients (for me that was clove pieces, star anise pods, and bay leaves). Allow to cool. You can speak over the finished product as well, to further boost the energy of the work. 

You can mix this recipe up however you want to, using whatever herbs you desire. Aromatic herbs are best because they’ll lend a wonderful scent to your bonfire or the fire in your wood stove. There are tons of ways to adjust this recipe and make it your own. This recipe makes 12 firestarters. You could even do different herb blends for each one, with a different intention for each month for the upcoming year.
