According to a study recently released by the National Education Association, just 55 percent of Americans read at least one book not required for work or school in 2012. The study didn’t measure how many books those respondents read, but I’d hazard that the average number isn’t high.
L’Engle’s distress and the NEA results raise a question for all who take their reading seriously: how much reading is enough?
