Rachel Danziger Sharansky is the daughter of Nathan Scharansky, the legendary human rights activist in Israel and former political prisoner in the Soviet Union.
Ms Danziger is a scholar with deep knowledge of the Christian tradition, and is a deeply thoughtful and spiritual soul. I have had the privilege of corresponding with her a bit.
She has lived in Jerusalem all of her life, is married, and has children. She writes with poignancy of the soul-searching that this new unprovoked violence against ordinary Jewish citizens has provoked: “I see that he is an Arab, and I am afraid. And I hate this feeling. And so, as I walk the streets of Jerusalem, I weep for the suspicions that separate us. And in my grief, I find my humanity, and hold on.”
She is a woman of prayer, and this crisis has sent her deep into the depths:
God, help me to survive. Help me to survive so that I can do good.
God, help my loved ones to survive. Help all of us survive. Keep us safe and secure, and we will strive together to be a blessing unto others.
