This is the key question.
We can talk all we want about moderate vs radical Muslims. But if “moderates” also say they want sharia law to displace all civil law in every country, or if they support violent jihad “sometimes” against unbelievers, or if they think Israel has no right to exist, then this is not a moderate Islam that can live at peace with non-Muslims.
But now there is a strong resolution proposed by Muslim scholars who are true moderates.
They support critical thinking inside Islam, criticism of Islam from outside Islam, secular governments, religious freedom for non-Muslims to not only believe but practice their religion. They support equal rights for women–to mobility, witness, work, and inheritance.
Perhaps the most important part: “We reject the idea of the Islamic state. There is no need for an Islamic caliphate. We oppose institutionalized sharia. Sharia is manmade.”
The only thing I do not see that I wish were there is a statement about Israel, since so many Muslims are so anti-Semitic and opposed to the existence of the Jewish state. This despite the world’s having 25 countries that have declared themselves to be officially Muslim states.
