When we were completing our Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel, I knew I wanted extra shelving, but our budget was almost full. Here’s how we used up an empty space to expand our pantry and get the shelves we wanted in our price range.
See those open cabinets? I lived with those for MONTHS. Originally, I was going to leave the doors off and have an open kitchen to display my dishes, but those 6 months without doors killed it for me. I know we were going through construction and demolition, but the dust on the plates were the final call for me.
Then I saw that open wall space behind the door! It’s about a foot deep and 2 feet wide. I talked to Trent to see if we could put open shelves there to hold our glass containers that were otherwise hidden in our pantry.
That way, I could get the open shelving look for my kitchen while leaving my cabinet doors on!
On a recent trip to IKEA, we found these Ekby Stodis brackets that were reduced to 50 cents each! I snatched six of them and couldn’t wait to get started.
We purchased a piece of 1 X 10 wood for $15 and Trent cut it to size. I opted for a thinner shelf to not make this too much of a focal piece. We usually leave that door open and I was worried that thicker wood would not look right.
We used the same Danish Oil that we purchased to stain the Coffee Bar countertop.
We dry-fit them to see how it looked…
And made sure it could bear the weight of the glass containers.
One bracket was secured to a stud and the other side was anchored with 65 lb screw anchors.
Then the real test was opening the door.
SCORE! It fit beautifully and wasn’t going to be hit by my boys (AKA Rowdy and Raucous) when they charge through the door like an elephant!
Do you have one of those?
Then the next morning, after the stain had set overnight, I didn’t like how light the shelves turned out, so we added a second coat of the stain to darken them.
Much better!
I loved how the stain matched the antique telephone we have.
I’m currently hunting for glass containers that can hold our flour and sugar.
We live in the country, which means pests! I quickly learned the hard way that I need to keep those items tightly sealed to keep critters away.
Yes, we drink excessive amounts of tea (when I’m not drinking coffee!)
To tie in the red accents from my Coffee Bar, I placed an old bubble gum dispenser we had on one of the shelves paired with a vintage child’s cookbook that belonged to my mother.
I was able to utilize an unused space behind the door and expanded our pantry storage for less than $20!
