DIY Farmhouse Fan – Making Over Your Ugly Fixture

A DIY Farmhouse Fan - how to turn an ugly fixture into something fancy!

We all have them in our homes – ugly ceiling fans that we would love to get rid of, but desperately need to keep. Here’s how we turned our eyesore of a fixture into a DIY Farmhouse Fan!

Do you remember that TV show Trading Spaces? Every week, Trent and I would tune in to see what amazing transformations Vern and Genevieve would do to the rooms – and every week, we heard the same thing.

“That ceiling fan HAS to go!”

And every week, Trent would roll his eyes.  You see, he grew up in the deep South.  The sweaty, humid, my goodness I never knew I could sweat there kind of south. You know, where you’ve cleaned up and coiffed yourself to perfection for it all to be ruined the moment you stepped over the threshold of your doorway into that blanket of humidity.

Yeah, that south. So he has been conditioned to fall asleep with that cool breeze flowing over him each night.

Now, I didn’t grow up in that type of humidity, but I did grow up the daughter of an HVAC guy. I still get calls to remind me to change the filters in my furnace – which have you done that lately?

Anyway, I grew up knowing that a ceiling fan would help the overall cost and energy effectiveness of your heating and air conditioning, so the fan stays for me too!

But that doesn’t mean I find them attractive.

I knew I wanted to up my game for our Master Bedroom for the One Room Challenge, and I was hoping to get a new ceiling fan like one of these:

But I knew that we had to focus our budget on making over our closets, so here’s the solution I came up with to transform our eyesore into a DIY Farmhouse Fan.

I have had these mesh hanging baskets that I’ve found at barn sales over the past few years. I thought they were so cute and I scored them for a couple of quarters.

I moved them around throughout my home, but could never find a home for them, so they’ve sat in my closet for just as long.

I thought – let’s see if I can use these instead of that hideous glass shade.

I started to disassemble them, separating the baskets from the chain.

Next, I had to see if the hole in the center of the mesh basket would fit over that center bolt and I was so excited that it did!

Next, I had to figure out how to keep the basket from collapsing without messing with the integrity of the electricity. I got thick wire and wrapped each screw holding the casing in place and then attached it to the basket and it worked!

I turned the fan to full blast to make sure it would stay put.

But then I noticed how ugly that white light casing was in contrast to the fan. So I disassembled everything, and took it outside to spray paint it with Oil Rubbed Bronze.

It looked so pretty, but needed one more special touch.  I replaced the light bulbs with some fancy LED Edison bulbs and added crystals to make my DIY Farmhouse Fan look all fancy.

Of course, I had to turn the fan back to full blast to make sure I didn’t hear any jingling that would disrupt our sleep.

We had a winner!

It’s still understated, but elegant.  A bit of masculine with the dark colors and mesh basket married with a touch of femininity.

The colors match my curtain rods and big, beautiful bed and I just LOVE how my Farmhouse-ified Fan turned out.

And we’re still cool at night and my electric bill is still happy!!
