My sons and I have been watching our way through the three Star Wars prequels (insert Jar Jar Binks jokes here), as a way to get excited for the new film. For a couple of hours after every movie my kids and I end up inverting our sentence structures to mimic the way Yoda speaks. The other night I was reading some Merton & realized that if you invert the sentence structure of famous Thomas Merton sayings, it sounds an awful lot like Yoda. Or maybe I should say, if invert the structure of his sentences you do; sounds like Yoda, Merton does.
I was trying to come up with a name for the amalgam – Yerton… Moda… nothing seems quite right. Nevertheless, here are a few of my favorites:
“The mark of spiritual insecurity, anxiety is.”
“The most heroic labor and the most difficult sacrifice, peace demands.”
“The path to faith reason is; when reason can say no more, takes over faith does.”
“More about ourselves than about Him, our idea of God tells us”
“Done in the classrooms, the least of learning is ”
“The absolute extreme of self-love, despair is .”
“The door to the full inner life of the Church, faith is.”
“Entirely too much privacy, to be unknown to God is.”
“To find ourselves and loose ourselves at the same time, Art enables us .”
“A spiritual stability too deep for violence, the peace produced by grace is. Unshakeable, it is ”
Here are the actual quotes:
“Anxiety is the mark of spiritual insecurity.”
“Peace demands the most heroic labor and the most difficult sacrifice.”
“Reason is in fact the path to faith, and faith takes over when reason can say no more.”
“Our idea of God tells us more about ourselves than about Him.”
“The least of learning is done in the classrooms. ”
“Despair is the absolute extreme of self-love.”
“Faith is the door to the full inner life of the Church”
“To be unknown to God is entirely too much privacy.”
“Art enables us to find ourselves and loose ourselves at the same time.”
“The peace produced by grace is a spiritual stability too deep for violence — it is unshakeable”
