Humanae Vitae – Still Truckin: 40 Years Later

Humanae Vitae – Still Truckin: 40 Years Later July 29, 2008

Humanae Vitae, the encyclical of the Catholic Church known more for it’s opposition to contraception than for it’s overall message, has just turned 40. Despite the naysayers, the Church still teaches the contraception is contrary to the reality of true love. No matter how “unpopular” the teaching, more and more people have come to embrace it. I’ve even met someone who converted to Catholicism after hearing Prof. Janet Smith’s talk, “Contraception, why not.”

In honor of the 40th anniversary, I’ll be posting various pieces here. Check back to see what’s new:

Here’s a piece I wrote for Mosaic, “When Sex Becomes Schizophrenic.”

For an overview of the history of the document’s reception, check out this piece in the NYT by  John Allen, expert Vatican journalist and author.
