Well, it appears that Notre Dame University is still somewhat confused about its Catholic identity. When considering who could possibly be invited to address the graduates of one of the most prestigious universities in the country, some of whom will hopefully be Catholic leaders, the university thought it would be good to invite President Obama, a politician who has one of the most extreme pro-abortion/anti-life records of any politician, if not the most extreme. I weighed for National Review Online’s... Read more

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi had a meeting on Wednesday with Pope Benedict XVI. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall or a mouse in the corner, but we’ve got this… The Vatican issued a statement about the meeting between the Pope and Speaker Pelosi. You may recall that she had a rather odd idea of the Church’s teaching regarding abortion. I wrote about it here. She tripped over her words but insisted that the Church has... Read more

Well, if you’ve been vacationing on Mars, you may have missed the story about the octuplets, or more specifically the mother of the octuplets. A lot of interesting information has been revealed and good questions are being raised. Last week, Nadya Suleman, the mother of the octuplets, gave interviews to NBC’s Today Show. As people find out more and more about the situation, it seems like something should be done. But what? Some facts to keep in mind: Ms. Suleman... Read more

It’s a rare person who hasn’t felt caught in the cultural crossfires of the sexual revolution. A successful woman playwright is no exception. Who hasn’t felt confused about gender roles, dating, sexual mores? Men don’t know when to open a door and when not to open a door. Women don’t know when leadership doesn’t necessarily mean picking up the tab or fixing his life. And that’s just the tip of the iceburg. Zoe Lewis published a sort of soul-searching piece... Read more

As Valentine’s Day approaches, thoughts turn to love, romance, dating, and even marriage. A while back, a good friend of mine wrote a piece on dating (“My Grandma Would Trash This Marxist Rubbish”). Now, she’s updated it with the sequel: proof that standards, dating, and happy marriage all have something to do with each other. In her piece, “Finding Mr. Right”, Guiomar describes how dating and her standards finally paid off. This week, I’ll be discussing Valentine’s Day and its... Read more

‘As someone who enjoys a good drink but doesn’t endorse drunkeness in any way, I found this op-ed on drinking very refreshing – not unlike a good drink! In the NYT, Paul Clarke writes “Why (and How) I Drink.” Growing up in a Latin-influenced home, alcohol was a normal part of my life. It was also no big deal; so binging never made any sense to me. In high school, friends paid older people to buy alcohol, a practice I... Read more

Today, President Barack Obama spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast. Just before announcing his new office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, he said something that would not be expected from one of the most pro-abortion politicians. The text can be found here on the White House website. I raise this history because far too often, we have seen faith wielded as a tool to divide us from one another – as an excuse for prejudice and intolerance. Wars have been... Read more

Ironically, it seems that where there’s a void of relgious belief or faith, something else fills that void and becomes the moral guide. These days, it’s not God for many people and there are no moral guidelines surrounding sex; so….it’s food. Mary Eberstadt authored this interesting piece , demonstrating that where there are no morals regarding sex (or other traditionally regulated actions), the focus goes to food. In both cases, there are dangerous excesses. Admittedly, I fall into that category... Read more
