2.Victory In Jesus – Eugene M. Bartlett

Surprise. Looking through the CCLI list, I actually laughed out loud when I came to this song. It’s a mid-20th century gospel song, and still being under copyright, is good enough for 100th place on the top 100 list. If you’re older than me and grew up Southern Baptist, you might be tempted to call this a “traditional hymn.” Good old number 475. I have to confess that this was my absolute favorite hymn song when I was a kid, just before the commercial takeover really caught hold in the mid-90s. I remember almost shouting “Oh VIC… TORY,” which didn’t matter, because our sanctuary auditorium was about as resonant as the back aisle at a Joann Fabrics. Yes, it was fun, and it brings back some good memories. Boy, could we really sing this one.

But I have to let it go. It contains a severely weak soteriology, and a false eschatology (read N.T. Wright’s Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church for an in-depth discussion of bad heaven theology).
