I believe the record-setting run of the production church will come to an end, but not soon enough. When that happens, and until then, may we be ready to introduce people to the beauty and great importance of the liturgy. May we remember to approach our own gatherings without expecting to have our compulsive need to be entertained addressed, lest we exchange the Christian story for our own in a slavish, masturbatory pursuit of limbic stimulation. May we be willing to set our weekend gatherings aside as a time to detox from the numbing, inebriating effects of a culture ultimately committed to simply filling the space.

When it comes down to it, we don’t need a Weekend Stage Manager, skilled in theatrical rigging and focused on customer service. An inventory of props only consisting of table, font, and pulpit doesn’t really demand that much organization, anyway. We just need God’s people, whether many or few, to come with hearts that are thankful for God’s gifts of grace, and hands that are open to God’s way of love, mercy, and justice.
