31 Days of Horror List: THE CHRISTIAN VERSION

31 Days of Horror List: THE CHRISTIAN VERSION September 30, 2018

By “Christian Version,” we mean that these movies do not have nudity, sex scenes, or much gore (if there is gore, it is warranted) in them. There is still often much bad language, violence, and possibly some crude humor. This list, like all lists, is arbitrary. Be sure to know your own conscience before you watch. But, Jeff and I recommend these movies as some of the best “clean” horror films of all time. Watch the “31 Days of Horror List: The Christian Version” with us the entire month of October!

“The Christian version”? As an evangelical fan and scholar working in horror, I find this as problematic as the knee-jerk reactions many Christians have against horror wholesale. By its very nature horror is subversive, and yet we want to find a palatable, neutered version that won’t upset our sensibilities rather than engaging it on its own terms? Horror can reveal things to us, help us better understand the divine, and addresses questions of spirituality and evil better than any other genre. Let’s try to discerningly engage it without worrying about Christian versions.

I thought this was a joke at first. Clinging to christian “morality” i suppose. I’d be more concerned about christian reality in the news than horror movies.

I’ll take a bit of a dose of all the sex and stuff … never hurt anyone; but be careful of the kiddies. There are some things that they don’t understand.

  • I experienced Jesus as the consciousness of the Sun.

Thiswas during a time when I was using a legal substance intermittently
over the course of a few years. I wrote an ebook about my experiences
that is free to download in pdf form and the ebook is also available on
    blogger, links are below

  • John,

Interestingly enough, we agree with you. A lot of what you have written here we affirmed in our earliest episodes (on Get Out and Muschietti’s IT if you are interested in listening, later in the episode on The Exoricism of Emily Rose). Having said that, we do nonetheless object to sexualized nudity and dehumanizing gore (in the sense of gore for gore’s sake). Far from “neutered” versions these are standards consistent with our consciences as informed by Scripture. In the last two sentences you wrote we are in hearty agreement. In the prior sentences you haven’t understood us. I’m not even saying that the lack of understanding is [entirely, mostly] on your end, rather just trying to clear up the confusion.
