The Gift of the Rhythm of Life

The Gift of the Rhythm of Life April 2, 2023

I took this when I was strolling through Brooklyn. The Rhythm of Life definitely beats in Manhattan.

The Gift of the Rhythm of Life

“And The Rhythm Of Life is a powerful beat,

Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet,

Rhythm in your bedroom,

Rhythm in the street,

Yes, The Rhythm Of Life is a powerful beat.”

Cy Coleman

What is your rhythm?

Is it in 4/4?

Is it a waltz that sways along in ¾?

Is it allegro, andante, or presto?

Is it lento, largo or tempo rubato?

Some days it may be presto or vivace.

There are days when it moves a tempo.

Rallentando, ritenuto, and accelerando.

They are all different cadences just like life.

There are days when it feels so quick.

Some days are like a dance, a run, or a sprint but that rhythm of life is quite a gift.

Lets make each rhythm a chance to see that in life there are many opportunities to grow, to learn and quite possibly be an encouragement to others in this grand opportunity of life’s melody.

In music there are rhythms and tempos.  Those terms, those tempos set the pace and mood of a piece.  Is it not amazing that music, which has stood the test of time, performs in the song of our lives? Some days it is andante, a walking pace.  Other days it is presto where everything seems at a very fast pace.  Tempo rubato is in a free and relaxed time, at your own pace.  Vivace is fast and lively, lento is slow, largo is slower and broad.  Rallentando, Ritenuto and accelerando impart changes in pace in the midst of the piece, to go gradually slower and immediately slower to give the piece style and grace. These terms are a lot like life, are they not? They have been around since the Renaissance.  What beautiful tempo and rhythm can you make of your life?  Can you take a day where it just seems like everything is lento (very slow) and make it a lovely melody?  When it’s presto can you show others that even when things are fast paced you can convey finesse and discipline.  That is the other concept about rhythm.  It requires discipline and consistency.  The ability to count means keeping that pace going, not wavering so that the piece can come together.  Our rhythm is an expression of us. Discipline is hard, some are quite good at it. Others, (myself included) have to make the conscious choice to choose to dance the dance and sing the tune of discipline and consistency.  Some days that melody is fraught with wrong notes.  To be quite honest it hurts my ears,  but the urge to keep going wins and the tune becomes more refined with time and practice.  I am reminded of a quote that I read recently.  “When the rhythm of life changes-dance to the new beat” Kate Nasser.  Can you dance when the rhythm changes?  I often read and hear that humans are fed up with the dances they see. Having six grown children has started a new piece of our lives at home. The solitude of a silent house has played a new melody in our lives for sure. I must admit, I have been in a very Lento state. To top it off the Lento piece is in a minor (sad) key.  What do you do when life is Lento? You pause, listen to the respite and compose a life piece that illustrates the highs of achievement and the lows of loneliness. The joy or the crescendo (the music getting louder) of seeing your loved ones and friends. In life, we can compose a piece of lovely music that can be quite a masterpiece that stands the test of time.   Let us start the new dance, the inspirational dance to live a life of significance and substance.
