O Christ of the Incarnation, we pray that You will strengthen and refresh those holy women who have answered Your call to be set apart with You. They are for the world a sign and symbol of the faith You ask of each of us; they sustain us through their prayers and the work of their hands. We ask that You sustain them in kind, Lord. Let Your grace fill them with love, that they may delight in serving You... Read more

Well, autumn is upon us and it’s nearly time for planting spring bulbs. Let’s start this column with definitions that will help you get a handle on nomenclature: True bulbs contain their leaves and flowering parts inside. These include tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths. Corms carry their leaf parts on the outside to support interior bud development and include crocuses and gladiolas. Rhizomes like Canna lilies and iris form leaves and buds from a growing end or tip. Tubers, like potatoes,... Read more

Lord Jesus, we your people pray to You for our priests. You have given them to us for our needs. We pray for them in their needs. We know that You have made them priests in the likeness of Your own priesthood. You have consecrated them, set them aside, anointed them, filled them with the Holy Spirit, appointed them to teach, to preach, to minister, to console, to forgive, and to feed us with Your Body and Blood. Yet we... Read more

I’m catching on to why its so unsettling to be in the presence of chatty elderly women. Its because I like to do and there is nothing to be done beyond my presence. In my discomfort I default to what is most familiar, silence, and listening. Here is the problem. When you’re dealing with someone who is a good listener, they wait.  A good listener doesn’t try to alter what it is you’re thinking, or bring their personal bias into your words. It is... Read more

Each year I would plant a few tender bulbs for their summer blooms or dramatic leaves. They are a wonderful addition to the home garden. The term tender bulb refers to bulbs, corms, tubers, and rhizomes that will be winter killed by our Zone 5 winters. These tender bulbs need to be removed from the ground before winter sets in. A few of the more commonly grown tender bulbs are Canna, Tuberous Begonia, Gladiolus, Caladium, Belladonna Lilies, Elephant Ears, and... Read more

Eternal Father, Please bless our priests, who represent you on this earth.  Make them more greatly aware of the grace that you pour out through them when they minister the sacraments, and help them to fall more deeply in love with you through every Mass that they celebrate. Please strengthen our priests, who shepherd your flock, when they are in doubt of their calling, that they may be examples of faith in your truth and guide us always on the path to you.... Read more

I’m still trying to find my place as a pray-er among the residents at the women’s care facility. As an introvert and hermit, and with what little social skills I possess, the challenge is large. I had been given a list of names of the women who are Catholic and ambled to each room to introduce myself. Awkwardly I’d pause to greet those in the corridors and sitting areas. In the first room, the woman sat on the side of... Read more

Let us pray for our future Sisters and Nuns that they, like the Blessed Virgin Mary, will trust in their own annunciation of being called to a religious profession. That they will not fear what they do not know, will bear in holy confidence whatever befalls, and that they bring into our world the Light of Christ brought forth through Mary. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.     Read more

Lord Jesus, once you called the first disciples in order to make them fishers of men. Continue to let resound today your sweet invitation: “Come and follow Me.” Grant to young men the grace of responding promptly to your voice. Sustain our bishops, priests and consecrated souls in their apostolic work. Give perseverance to our seminarians and to all those who are fulfilling the ideal of a life of total consecration to your service. Enkindle in our communities a missionary... Read more
