Feel, in the spirit of the whole country being covered in snow, except for the divinely favored in the south, who apparently have spring, but must have sacrificed the firstborn, or at least a couple of pigeons to get it, that I should begin the daily blog with the report that it is snowing. There it comes, gently out of the sky, to remind us that all flesh is as frozen grass, humankind is a sinful proposition, and deserves only... Read more

Good Morning. Looks like we’ve officially recovered from Easter even if we haven’t. Back to work it is. To cheer ourselves up we’ve done a nice long podcast in which we clearly and concisely explain what’s wrong with all Christians, especially of the Evangelical kind, everywhere. But that’s not all. We provide a simple and easy solution that everyone will enjoy. It’s wholesome fun for the whole family. And now, let me see, how ’bout some links. This is nice.... Read more

Came to a depressed halt in the middle of Numbers this week. I find the saga of the people of Israel coming up to the edge of the Promised Land, and refusing to go in, one of the more depressing parts of the Bible, almost as nail-biting sad as Samson, the Levite’s Concubine, David and Bathsheba, the whole book of Jeremiah, and the Crucifixion. You know it’s coming, you dread it, you steel yourself and read it anyway, you breathe... Read more

Would you look at that, it’s Friday. One The great thing about this week was that even though we had to do school, we didn’t have to do it at the crack (not to be crass) of rosy-fingered dawn every day. Everyone got to sleep in for multiple days in a row. Indeed, it is eight o’clock right now and no child that I know of is awake. This is the best thing in the world. BEST. The worst though?... Read more

It is Easter week, of course, and so I should be wrapped up in a large woolen blanket, what with it also still being winter, eating bonbons and learning how to spell “desert,” I mean, “dessert.” But instead of that I’ve been trying to clean the house, and get the children through some school work, and have also, stupidly, put my toe into the vast, rushing, gently putrid stream of news that is always available on the internet. The trouble... Read more

Don’t worry. Didn’t die. Did fall asleep for a couple of days, and probably will spend a portion of today recumbent and comatose. Good thing Easter is a whole season, or I wouldn’t have noticed it when it passed by on Sunday. Fortunately it goes on for weeks and weeks. There are all kinds of scenes from the week I could divulge, like the fact that every year I forget that I am allergic to lilies and spend a day... Read more

There you are, bound tightly up in your various garments. Your cloak, your tunic, your hat. It’s been an awfully long and frustrating day. It started off fine, you got up, you had breakfast, you got dressed in all these robes that are now constricting you, and you went to work. But just when you were getting into your groove, word came down from management that you had to drop everything you were doing, and trot down to the center... Read more

It is Good Friday, and the sky is gray and cloudy, spitting rain–the suitable backdrop for the occasion. But as with every year, I can’t possibly be mournful. It is the best day for humanity in every age and place. It is the best day because there is no way to walk through it without feeling, in the bones, the irrepressible amazement that the death of one man undid death itself. But you might still find yourself doubting. And so... Read more

It seems Planned Parenthood is feeling on the down and outs and wishes there could be a Disney princess, that iconic identity marker of our times, who had loudly and proudly made use of the services available in their facilities, and I don’t mean the free exam. Boy, that brings on the sparkle, doesn’t it. The pure, virginal thrill of the princess and the prince sweeping across the dance floor, looking into each others eyes, feeling the music carry them... Read more

[Jesus watching me flail.] I’ve got a bunch of blog posts half written, shoved in the back of my mind, jumbled against a list of things to do thirty miles long. I am feeling the pinch of time and the total absence of eternity. The minutes slip by one by one and as they slip, so pile up the tasks necessary for the impending feast. Like I should pop out to the store several times. And wash the big pot.... Read more
