Eight years ago, we were in the throes of a sudden move. It was the coldest month in Binghamton that I remember, we had lost our cat, Matt was beginning to admit that his mouth really hurt and that he should go to the dentist, our whole lives were in boxes, and then, suddenly, it was Inauguration Day. I woke up that morning in a panic. We did have a tv, but it was shoved in a corner behind a... Read more

[See how bad it is!] This is the week of the listicle, probably, because I am tragically in my third week of moving back and forth between the couch and a chair, trying to pretend that I feel better than I do. Two trips to the doctor, a round of antibiotics, and hours of frustration–don’t want to even think about what God is trying to tell me. Here’s what happens when The Mother gets sick. *No one can remember how... Read more

Katherine Timpf, who, by the way, has awesome hair and awesome glasses, reported, with duly appropriate snark, that, “The divinity schools at Duke and Vanderbilt Universities have instructed their professors to start using more ‘inclusive’ language when referring to God because the masculine pronouns “have served as a cornerstone of the patriarchy.” Vanderbuilt, for example, wants professors to pay, “‘consistent attention to the use of inclusive language, especially in relation to the Divine,’ because the school ‘commits continuously and explicitly... Read more

Its a bright sunny day, but very cold, so I think I will stick with my plan of huddling up on the couch and yelling at the children to be good. While I do that you cann’t listen to today’s podcast because I’m going to retape it and I haven’t done it yet. Cough. You can read all the links though. First up, here is the article Matt referenced in the podcast that will be up later. Next, my mother’s... Read more

No book or house notes today. Instead, I’ve been working this last week with Christianity Today on a little rewrite of that snark fest from a week and a half ago. So grateful for their patience and help and clear thinking! Instead of reading me here, go over there! Here’s a little teaser… TIME recently published a piece on housework and parenting asserting that until men share the “invisible workload that drags women down,” women will never be free. Lisa... Read more

One One of my favorite ways to read the Bible is to wake up way too early, freak out about everything, turn on the audio bible, lie there freaking out, and then like thirty seconds later completely conk out because it’s so soothing. The only problem with this is the weird dreams. Instead of being yourself you discover you’re Abimelech feeling totally put out because it’s apparently Your fault even though Abraham was the one who lied to you. Also,... Read more

Humiliated myself by going to the doctor yesterday. Not only was I measured, again (for real?), but I was gazed upon with dubious eyes by both nurse and white coated somebody or other. She, of the white coat, lowered her glasses, tsked, and told me to “feel better.” It’s not that there’s nothing wrong with me (don’t pile on), it’s that there isn’t anything anyone can do. It’s a virus. The children all got well, according to her, because they... Read more

[Jesus contemplating a more than usual “sensual” inauguration.] I’m facing down a “news” overload–too many things going on and I’m too sick to care enough about any of them. Obama’s farewell speech? I was already asleep in bed. Trump’s inauguration is going to be “sensual”? Oh my word. Meryl Streep…whatevs. That supposed march, I mean rally, on Washington to protest something or other. Not interesting enough to tempt me. Russian hacking? Dylann Roof? Clock Boy? Wait? You wanted Links? I’m... Read more

Not all of you, dear readers, are my true and sublime Facebook friends, although many of you are, and so perhaps some of you don’t know that there is a truly glorious meme percolating along. Basically, you compose you’re features into a disappointed frown and then, grasping onto my book, you take a selfie. Then you put it on Facebook, and hopefully tag me, and then your friends get on and say, “What gives?” “Why no smiling?” “Boy your sure... Read more

I’m probably going to have to give up and go to the doctor in the next couple of days, not being able to kick whatever bug is persecuting me. That hasn’t stopped us from doing up a podcast. This week Matt makes fun of my seven minute workout, I berate him for his cell phone use, and we talk about God preserving the believer through faith. I can’t imagine that you’d want to miss it–actually, that’s not true, you probably... Read more
