Aside from Easter, this Sunday is kind of a big deal for our congregation. The sermon has to be about the Good Shepherd, and sometimes there’s a potluck, or a cake, and nicer than usual flowers. It’s our name day—we’re The Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd. Though a lot of those words are hard to spell. The new sign had to be sent back for correction, for example, because the church is not called “Angelican Church of the Good... Read more

I’m over at Stand Firm today. Enjoy! ******************************************* Matt has been going all over the internet reposting one of my first Stand Firm pieces about how I (at least) don’t think we can yet be friends with those who happily self-identify as Episcopalian or some other brand of Progressive Christian. The war isn’t over, I said, it’s actually gotten worse, as many of us expected. Today I want to do a listicle of how to talk to old-timey curmudgeons like Matt... Read more

Jesus when you try to explain that you’re just “speaking your truth.” This is a fascinating tweet, most especially for many of the comments underneath. The twitter account is pretty profane, and I did not feel particularly edified by my thirty-second scroll. However, the tweet itself is instructive. Essentially, a father, upon being asked by his college-aged son for advice, divulged a lot more information than was necessary. The follow-up tweets are largely disagreements about whether or not this father... Read more

I read this several weeks ago but had to set it aside against a more opportune time. Which turned out to be today (or maybe yesterday) when the wide angry world woke up to Hollis’ Instagram vaunting her own trademark face and the words, “Still, I rise,” which, if you didn’t know, is a line from a famous poem by Maya Angelou. Immediately the narrow habitations of twitter rose up as one, accusing Hollis not only of plagiarism but... Read more

Good Moaning. Sitting here propped up in my bed staring at a gray Binghamton sky, waiting for the rain to sweep across the hills and into the valley–the regular day I always expect to have here, I guess. Anyway, we’ve done up a decently lengthed podcast about what to do if you are looking at the long days in front of you feeling hopeless about your marriage (in particular). How can you begin to repair something that seems irreparable? Is... Read more

We had a fun thought experiment at lunch this week, brought about by one of the children reading The Great Divorce for the first time, which led to me badly trying to explain the plot of Jean Paul Satre’s L’enfer C’est Les Autres (Hell is Other People) in which three damned souls have to live in one room for eternity arguing with each other and never finding resolution. Think The Good Place only in French and really depressing and therefore... Read more

I guess it is Friday, and my poor blog isn’t just meant for piles of embedded videos. Let’s see if we can think of some takes. One I did sort of “finish” something yesterday. Not really, but sort of. I figured out the numbering for my poor book. Only took me the better part of ten months. I took out and then redistributed (I think)—and this is so important—the same number, so that it still comes up to 365. Now... Read more

A kind (or unkind?) friend alerted me to this article, and I say some stuff about it into my camera. Enjoy! Read more
