I have never read books as thoroughly as I have when I read for a book club. I read Walker Percy’s The Moviegoer for a book club led by a Dominican brother (Dominicans are great book club leaders).
When I first entered the convent, I led a book club in our book store in St. Louis on the book The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene. I had read the book before but discussing different aspects of the book in a group helped me to learn so much. Discussing books in groups, especially the best book of all, the Bible, brings the treasure of wisdom from diverse perspectives.
When I wrote the book The Prodigal You Love: Inviting Loved Ones Back to the Church I did not envision that it would just be for individual readers. I hoped that priests and lay people who are active in parishes would see the value in it and encourage it to be read by their parishioners. Thanks be to God this has been happening.
Anyone who is “on the ground” in parish life knows that almost every Catholic in the pews have loved ones who have left the Church. It is the source of great pain and sadness for many people.
That is why I hope that The Prodigal You Love will not only soothe people’s pain but also help them to feel like there are concrete things that one can do now to invite loved ones back to the Church. I also hope that communities can grow up around this issue to support one another and share insights and experiences.
Because of this hope I wrote a book club supplement for The Prodigal You Love to stimulate discussion and help any group of concerned Catholics to gather and share the ideas, pains and joys that surround this issue and help one another to become more proactive, (or less nagging and more peaceful), in our relationships with others.
You can find the book club supplement HERE…
Please share this with anyone you think might be interested!
If you have anyone who you would like The Daughters of St. Paul to pray for who has left the Church, please leave their name (first name only) in the comments and we will keep them in our prayers.
