God Calms the Storm: A Message of His Peace in Psalm 107:29

God Calms the Storm: A Message of His Peace in Psalm 107:29 January 26, 2022

God calms the storms in our lives, as Psalm 107:29 reminds us. What’s interesting to me is that this verse serves as a foreshadowing of one of Jesus’ special moments with His disciples.

“He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.”

Psalm 107:29

This is one of my favorite Psalms, a verse I meditate on to soothe my worries about the future. Psalm 107:29 helps me combat this obnoxious storm of anxiety that’s been roiling in my mind as I’ve been carving my freelance writing path these last few weeks.

God vs. Storms

When God speaks to us, He stills the storms within us and removes our fear of the storms surrounding us. No matter how harshly these storms may rage, His words instill peace within us.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

John 14:27

Here’s a soothing Christian meditation I found on YouTube that uses this verse as the focus:

Storm Parallels

I love finding parallels between Old and New Testament passages! This Psalm about God calming the waters has some great parallels with Jesus doing the same with His disciples.

These children’s Bible study animations on YouTube are fun to watch and do a great job of conveying the meaning of the verses they’re inspired by.

Here’s one about Jesus calming the storm after His disciples wake Him up with their terrified pleas:

“On that day, when evening had come, He said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side.’ And leaving the crowd, they took Him with them in the boat, just as He was. And other boats were with Him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke Him and said to Him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’

And He awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’ And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?'”

Mark 4:35-41

Jesus Saves Peter

Here’s another fun Bible study animation, this time on the instance where Jesus helps Peter walk on water:

“Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. And after He had dismissed the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from the land beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.

But when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, ‘It is a ghost!’ and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.’

And Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’ He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me.’

Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of him, saying to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’ And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.'”

Matthew 14:22-33

Trusting Jesus to help us get through the many storms that ravage our lives is what gives us the peace of mind we deserve. When we face terror, He stands firm against every raging tempest and guides us through life’s turmoil.

Trust God Through the Storms

I love meditating on Psalm 107:29, especially as somebody who struggles with depression. I’m thankful for God helping me find the courage to ask for help and not be afraid of admitting when I’m not ok. Thank goodness for God, family, friends, and Wellbutrin (an amazing anti-depressant)!
