23Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters; 24they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep. 25For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. 26They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their calamity; 27they reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits’ end. 28Then they cried to the Lord in... Read more

Earlier this month, Madonna visited Malawi with her children, and, though she’d requested to meet with President Joyce Banda, she didn’t get to see her nor received any sort of special treatment from the government. And apparently, upon leaving the country, Madonna and her children had to go through the ordinary security line instead of the VIP process. An official from the Malawian State House has issued a statement in response to what it called “Madonna’s outbursts” over not receiving... Read more

I’ve been feeling crappy for a while. Can I blame my awful, terrible allergies on my parents? Because I have always had awful, terrible allergies, and, yes, I have tried everything you’re going to suggest, from allergy shots to Allegra to local honey to non-dairy to acupressure to neti pots, to no avail. (Maybe it’s unfixable, and I just have to cope.) And cope I do, which is why I often have trouble distinguishing between the sort of crappy feeling... Read more

I’m going to take a page out of Mother Jones blogger Kevin Drum’s book and start a new tradition. On Fridays, I’m posting cat pictures. Okay? Because I just need to get it out in the open how very much I love pictures of cats on the Internet. And my very favorite cat in the world is far away from me right now, and I can enjoy him only through pictures. (Well, and Skype. Yes, I Skype with my cat.... Read more

Well, now that I’ve published a book, I get to sit back and sagely dispense Wisdom on Writing, right? Wrong, but, now that I’ve published a book, I’ve had people tell me that they’d like to do the same, and do I have any advice for them? Maybe I do. #1 Decide what you really love: writing or the idea of having a book published. There’s a big, big difference. If you don’t really love writing–and by this I don’t... Read more

A few weeks ago we were in South Africa, and I was so excited to be able to go into a HUGE grocery store so that I could get, among other things, rice vermicelli noodles so that I could make what is one of my very favorite things to eat: pancit bihon! I made it the day after we returned and am trying to hold myself back from making it again. Tonight. My very oldest friend (by which I mean... Read more

I have a new post up at Christianity Today’s women’s blog–her.meneutics–about the role of the labor doula, why Medicaid may soon pay for doula care, and why Christians should care. Here’s a sample: At one time, evangelical Christians gave hearty support to “natural childbirth”: before Tim LaHaye was famous for Left Behind, he was well-known for the Family Life Seminars, which advocated for natural childbirth. Ingrid Trobisch, bestselling author of Christian advice books, including the amusingly titled book The Joy... Read more

Unless you have a lot of household help, or a large family of unusually capable children, I’m betting that there are at least some mindless drudge tasks that you must do on a daily or weekly basis, some of which you put off repeatedly because you just hate doing them. Some tasks–ironing, laundry-folding, Nordic-Tracking (ha!)–can be easily combined with TV-watching, but others–dish-washing, mopping, onion-chopping, dusting, bathroom-cleaning, sweeping–can’t. Now, you may envision these activities as potentially social, or as opportunities to practice... Read more
