Inevitable

There are things in this world which are inevitable, most famously death and taxes. Our next President is not among them, and yet you wouldn’t know that by watching television. MSNBC was reporting today on the plans for Obama’s victory party for election night and the musicians invited to play at the inauguration. Isn’t this a bit premature? We don’t even vote until Tuesday and yet the parade is already planned.

I read a story today about inevitability. It is the story of a mouse and a viper. A group of Taiwanese firefighters “rescued” a little poisonous snake from a local house and made a pet of it. They caught a little mouse to feed to their new “friend” and dropped him in the cage expecting to end up with a happy snake.

The little mouse looked at the snake and decided that he didn’t want to be dinner and fought back. He bit and kicked and fought the viper for half an hour, and when he was done the snake was dead and the mouse had hardly a scratch on him.

I’ll be thinking of the mouse when I watch the news tonight, and when they start discussing inaugural plans I’ll let them know what I think. I don’t want to be anyone’s free meal ticket. Like the mouse, I’ll use my full arsenal to prevent it. I’ll vote against it, and discuss it with friends, and blog about, and volunteer, and pray, and call the news station and complain, and refuse to go down without a fight, and maybe like the mouse my ideals will be the last ones standing because there’s nothing inevitable in this world but death and taxes. Just let the taxes be a little smaller, please.
