Yesterday, I began asking people in the Middle East why, in their opinions, weren’t other Arab countries coming to the aid of the Palestinians. More specifically, why they weren’t granting them sanctuary. I’ve learned a lot, and will keep asking this question as the answers are fascinating. Here’s what I know for sure after the last 24 hours:
1. Smart, honest people can all stand together and watch something happen and not one of them seems to know everything about what happened. You have to piece the information together.
2. Don’t p*ss off your neighbors, because one day you may need their help and you will only get a token protest while your house burns.
3. If people don’t like what the honest answer to your question is then they will answer the question they want to answer. It may have nothing to do with what you asked, and even a good, polite follow-up won’t get you an honest answer to your question. It makes wonder what it is that they don’t want to face.
4. Even the smartest people, when angry, will refuse to see the humanity and genuine concerns of the people living next door. No matter what. I have been treated to a constant reminder that in a conflict, people will deny the humanity of the other side. The Jews are pigs, the Palestinians are savage apes, and nothing will convince them otherwise.
Is there a solution to this? I sure hope that there is, but I doubt it. I can’t tell you how sad it makes me to say that I don’t think this will end until one side or the other is completely erased from existence.
