The Pledge..

The Pledge.. 2014-08-22T15:53:34-05:00

“I pledge to be a servant of our President….” So say Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher and a host of other Hollywood celebrities in their new “I Pledge” campaign as they swear their loyalty (fealty?) to the new President. I have chills, and not the good kind.

Why does this feel like deja vu? I have seen videos of people in times past, celebrities and glitterati, swearing their love and devotion to a charismatic leader before this, and it never ends well for those people who disagree with that leader.

I would like to remind Mr and Mrs Kutcher that they have it backwards. The oath taken yesterday was for Obama to be our servant rather than for us to serve him. That is why elected officials are also called “public servants”. They work for us. We are not here to serve the whims of the man who, in the words of Keith Olberman yesterday, “made his ascendancy”.

Words matter. Mr Obama did not ascend to any great and holy place. He took the oath of office of the Presidency of the United States, and he had to be helped to get that right. (What would they be saying about Mr. Bush if he had needed the same help?) Contrary to popular culture, he is not a celestial figure upon whom all our hopes and dreams rest. We do not need to make offerings of service to the President. Here’s the thing, and this is important….He was sworn in. He was not deified.

I find this video to be frightening and a little sad. Sad because these selfish, narcissistic people could have been doing all of these things to help their fellow man for the last eight years and they would have already “been the change they want to see.” Instead, they sat idly by while children went hungry or struggled to read, or any one of the other problems they mentioned. Those problems are real, and they were just as real sixteen years ago as they are today. The only difference is that they were without a messianic figure to pledge their love and loyalty to at that time.

In the spirit of making pledges, I have a few of my own to make. I make them not to a fake messiah, but to my fellow citizens. Here we go:

I pledge to fight the creep of Marxism in our country no matter how pretty a name it has or how slick the salesman.

I pledge to work tirelessly to be sure that the very young and the very old are not sacrificed upon the altar of convenience.

I pledge to raise my children to be good citizens of our country which was founded upon the principles of Life and Liberty, not just the Pursuit of Happiness.

I plan to speak out loudly against those in Hollywood and the Main Stream Media who are too blinded by hero worship and their own ignorance to see the dangers they have elevated to the highest office in the land.

I pledge to pray for this country that God may protect us from our own foolishness and may stay His hand against us.

I pledge to speak the truth and keep speaking it even if no one wants to hear it.

Who’s with me? What do you pledge?
