Our girls have now been gone for a week and a half. We miss them terribly, but the boys have enjoyed the freedom of a girl-free house. All but one.
Yesterday afternoon, #1 called as I was making lunch. Without thinking, I switched her to the speakerphone and set the phone on the kitchen counter. As her laughter sounded in the kitchen, a voice cried out from the next room, “Maw-Dee?” (His pet name for her.)”Maw-Dee!”
He sped into the room as fast as his little legs could carry him. “My Maw-Dee!” He exclaimed as he snatched my phone and she squealed, “#5! I love you!”
“Wuv oo.” He replied, then they began to run through all of their funny inside jokes. He talked to her for almost half an hour, telling her about the show on TV, the color of the sky, anything he could think of just to keep her talking. Eventually, she had to go and sadly told him goodbye.
That half hour conversation was not enough for #5. When he got up from his nap, he stole my phone off of its charger and put it in his pocket. What followed was an afternoon long conversation between him and the phone. “See, Maw-Dee? See the bird?” “I like cookies, Maw-Dee. Are you playing with my train and cars and helicopter?”
It didn’t seem to bother him that she wasn’t answering him. She is his Maw-Dee, so she’s always listening. At bedtime he told the phone, “Night-night Maw-Dee. Kiss me good night.” He kissed the phone and placed it back in my hand.
When we began to homeschool, people told us of the close relationships which would develop between our children. What these two have is beyond anything I even knew to hope for.
Sweet #5, your Maw-Dee will come home to you soon.
