Did you watch the Inauguration yesterday? Me neither. I forgot that it was happening. It’s been a busy few days.
This morning, as I flipped quickly through still shots of the ceremony, I gasped. Have you seen the picture of Justice Scalia? More importantly…did you see his hat?
If you’re not Catholic, it may look like just some weird hat. If you are, it may look a little familiar. It should.
It’s a custom made replica of this hat. It’s the hat of St Thomas More – brilliant lawyer and martyr of the Faith.
For those of you who don’t know, St Thomas was martyred for defending the Catholic Church against the tyranny and religious persecution of Henry VIII. He died for asserting that the King of England had no power over the Catholic Church, and that citizens ought to be free to follow the teachings of their faiths.
Wearing the hat of a defender of religious freedom to the inauguration of a President who seems hell-bent on stripping Catholics of our religious liberties may be a breath-takingly daring example of silent protest, or it could be that he meant absolutely nothing by his odd choice in head wear yesterday. Which seems more likely to you?
As for me, I hope that he sparks a new trend and the President begins to see these funny hats everywhere he goes.
Pray for us, St Thomas More, that we may have the strength to follow your example anywhere it leads us.
