We live relatively close to Irving, Texas (it’s on the other side of the Dallas area) and all anyone here can talk about is Ahmed Mohamed and his clock.
If you don’t know who he is, he’s an engineering genius child who built a homemade digital clock and brought it to school to show his teachers. They thought it looked like a bomb and called the police. Ahmed was arrested, and the whole world seems to be reaching out to this child and verbally smacking the school officials around for their stupidity.
I see nothing wrong with any of that. What happened to him was wrong. Period.
There are a lot of reasons why the teachers might have been twitchy about his engineering project – 1) It really does kind of look like a bomb. 2) All of those teachers have memories of Columbine. 3) They all are aware of what’s going on in the world and people names Mohamed seem to be blowing stuff up a lot.
You can debate whether or not they were wrong and it was racist, but I think that’s the secondary discussion we need to be having.
All of these educators be fired. They thought some kid had brought a good-sized bomb to school, and nobody evacuated the school.
Which means either they were reckless with the safety of the students in their care, or they never really though that it was a bomb after all.
