24 lovers will recognize Harrison Ford’s geeky assistant Chloe in the new movie “Firewall.” I saw it tonight and it is just an action-packed, nail-biting movie, kinda like 24 but with more violence and language (unfortunately).
One of the interesting points is a young male character whose cell phone ringer was familiar. I thought “is that ‘What A Friend We Have In Jesus?'” A few moments later, the character is helping lead worship (believe it or not) at an inner-city Charismatic service performing “Jesus, Jesus, Friend of Mine”! What was very interesting to me is that this character, even though prominently identified as a Christian, isn’t some serial killer or even a bad guy. Who let this slip by Hollywood? Five, ten years ago and it would have been no question. If they’d have demanded a Christian be inserted into the movie, it would be the guy smacking around the wife quoting Scripture and using a Bible for detonator codes.
Michael Medved said in a lecture at Lee while I was there that Hollywood doesn’t understand Christians or at least the Christians who take their faith seriously. He said the average Hollywood insider probably thinks Christians wear polyester suits, slick hair and hair all over their hands. I guess that’s why it stands out so prominently to me that this guy’s faith was featured in a positive light.
So are we turning a corner? Have Christians infiltrated Hollywood enough to make subtle and not-so-subtle gestures that believers are normal, law-abiding and morally good people?
