Found this blog today on beliefnet where the guy lists 10 Christian songs he grew up loving but is now embarassed to admit it, songs like DC Talk’s “Word 2 the Father,” Carman’s “Who’s In the House” and Audio Adrenaline’s “Big House.” So it got me thinking, because I have plenty of those, going back a few years more even. Here are some:
- “People In A Box” -Farrell and Farrell – A Devo-ish song about television that incorporates the theme of the Flintstones.
- “Nu Thang” – DC Talk. When I spoke to TobyMac once, I went on about how much I loved the whole Nu Thang album when I was younger. He’s a good sport, but I kinda got the impression he’d rather not talk about it.
- “Beat the System” by Petra – They tried to go mainstream with this Brit-pop knockoff but it didn’t work. But when I first heard it, I started thinking yeah, Christian music is pretty cool – sounds like 80s music.
- “Friends In High Places” by Eric Champion – At the time, I thought this was one of the coolest songs out. It hasn’t exactly stood the test of time. We’ve come a long way, baby. “
- “Addicted to Jesus” by Carman and DC Talk – what more could you ask for?
- “GOD” by Rebecca St. James – I wore this entire album out. But she was so offended when my friend Derek said it sounded like Alanis. It did.
- “The Blood” by BeBe and CeCe and MC Hammer and Whitney Houston – what a talent pool!
- “Shake the Salt, Shine the Light” by the Williamsons. I remember our Christian radio station playing this non-stop and was so popular with the people my college. Yes, it was a little girl rapping, almost like a hip-hop “Dear Mr. Jesus.”
- “Next Time I Fall” by Amy Grant and Peter Cetera. Amy did her part, but Cetera’s 80s voice isn’t quite as timeless.
- “His Love’s Comin’ Over Me” by Clay Crosse. I was driving Anointed around when they were learning the woooo-la-la-la-la-la-la-la backup parts for the tour so I’ve been stuck with that ever since.
What are some of yours? (I may think of more)
