“Horizon” is Costner’s first film to direct since 2003’s “Open Range,” which received positive reviews. His debut directing film, “Dances With Wolves,” which won Best Director and Best Picture. The trailer previews the majestic scenery of the film while hinting at the struggles of post-Civil War America. It’s also particularly interesting to hear Costner and his”Yellowstone” nemesis Danny Huston’s narration. Costner, who most recently helped make “Yellowstone” a smash television hit, is a comfortable force in westerns, and this one in particular looks epic.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Costner said of “Horizon,” “I feel I’ve made a movie for the people, period. This isn’t a movie from me. I felt like it was my turn in my career to tell a story. This is the one I choose to tell. It’s just my turn.” He also added that he has plans for Chapters Three and Four.

The official synopsis for the film is:

In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many.  Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Kevin Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

“Horizon Chapter One” will release in theaters June 28, followed by “Horizon Chapter Two” on August 26 from Warner Brothers Pictures.
