Faith-Based Hit ‘Unsung Hero’ Releases to Digital Outlets

After earning more than $20 million at the box office and getting a highly-coveted A+ Cinemascore, Kingdom Story Company’s latest release “Unsung Hero,” released to digital outlets today. Directed by Joel Smallbone and Richard L. Ramsey and starring Daisy Betts, Joel Smallbone, Kirrilee Berger, Jonathan Jackson, Lucas Black, with Candace Cameron Bure, and Terry O’Quinn, the film centered on the Smallbone family’s new journey in America and the rise of singer Rebecca St. James.

Andrew Erwin, chief creative officer of Kingdom Story Company, said the film’s success at the box office was “amazing.”

“This little $5 million film, it’s the little film that could,” he said. “When we came out, nobody was expecting anything out of that film in the industry. But the fans stepped up, they let their voices be heard and the film delivered. It was an A+ Cinemascore. I was able to pull Richie and Joel Smallbone of for KING + COUNTRY to the side and I said ‘Guys, there’s only been a hundred filmmakers who got an A+ Cinemascore and you get to be number 101! Welcome to the club. It’s exciting to see just films continue to find their voice. I think the future is bright.”

In telling his family’s story, which he dubbed “a very expensive therapy session,” Joel Smallbone was determined to not just show the happy spots but the struggles as well.

““We certainly wanted it to be an honor project to family, but we did not want it to be a glory project for our family,” he said. “To honor someone well, you want to tell all sides of the story. He’s sort of a very conflicted character throughout the whole film. It was a very conflicting time in his life.”

“Unsung Hero” is now available on digital outlets. The film’s official synopsis follows:

Based on a remarkable true story, Unsung Hero follows Helen (Daisy Betts) and her husband David Smallbone (for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone) as they move their family from Down Under to the States with nothing more than their seven children, suitcases, and their love of music. As Helen and David set out to rebuild their lives, they begin to realize the musical prowess in their children, who would go on to become two of the most successful acts in inspirational music history: five-time GRAMMY Award®-winning artists for KING + COUNTRY and Rebecca St. James.
