Review: Season Two of ‘Rings of Power’ Expands and Excels August 28, 2024

As season two of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” premieres, viewers are invited back to the enchanting and perilous world of Middle-earth, where fantasy storytelling reaches new heights.

Two years ago, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” shattered records for Prime Video, drawing more than 25 million global viewers on its first day. The epic series, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary works that inspired six blockbuster films, continued the saga with a fresh narrative.

Season one reintroduced audiences to the diverse lands of Middle-earth through a rich tapestry of characters, including younger versions of Galadriel and Elrond, as well as Arondir, Isildur, the Stranger, Celebrimbor, and Prince Durin IV alongside his wife, Princess Disa.

As the new season unfolds, it’s clear that showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are holding nothing back in terms of action and storytelling. Drawing from the classic series while expanding on it with an intricate world and compelling performances, season two promises to be the television event of the year. Every moment is purposeful, with each episode driving the narrative forward through thrilling action and gripping drama.

Since the events of season one, the sinister Sauron has revealed himself, setting the stage for a monumental battle between good and evil. Galadriel, who once unknowingly befriended him, now grapples with guilt and regret, joining the elders in a desperate attempt to regain control. Their efforts to combat evil, however, come with the temptation of power, which can corrupt even the noblest of hearts.

Meanwhile, The Stranger and Nori continue their journey, providing moments of levity amidst the encroaching darkness. If the central question of season one was “Who is Sauron?” then season two asks, “Who is The Stranger?” Regardless of his identity, their storyline remains engaging and entertaining. Elsewhere, Arondir, the valiant elf warrior, continues his fight against the Orc armies, while Sauron cunningly ensnares Celebrimbor in his web.

The themes of guilt, betrayal, temptation, and heroism distinguish this series as a fantasy tale that not only captivates but also provokes thought. As the Bible warns, even the “very elect” can be deceived, and when the enemy roams the earth “seeking whom he may devour,” everyone must be vigilant against the lure of compromise.

Another aspect that sets “The Rings of Power” apart is its suitability for family viewing. While many streaming platforms have launched original fantasy series, Prime Video’s offering stays true to Tolkien’s legacy, eschewing adult content like sexual scenes or strong language. “Rings of Power” proves that a series doesn’t need these elements to appeal to a wide audience—this show has everything a viewer could want without them.

Season two of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” premieres Thursday, August 29, on Prime Video.
