Angel Studios, the film and television platform curated by more than 1 million members of the Angel Guild, announced a new partnership with Monarch Media to produce an original scripted musical series, “A Week Away: The Series.”
“The Angel Guild enthusiastically approved the proof-of-concept torch for ‘A Week Away’,” said Jared Geesey, chief distribution officer at Angel. “Our audience is eager to support exceptional, family-friendly entertainment. A Week Away checks all the boxes, and we couldn’t be more honored to work with these incredible musicians and storytellers.”
The series continues the story introduced in the 2021 Netflix coming-of-age musical film “A Week Away,” following a group of teens during a transformative summer at Camp Aweegaway, a Christian camp centered around adventure, friendship and personal growth.
The cast includes Antonio Cipriano (“Phoenix”), Cozi Noelle Zuehlsdorff (“Dolphin Tale”), David Koechner (“Charmed”), Leigh-Allyn Baker (“Will & Grace”), Sacha Carlson (“911: Lone Star”), and Carlos PenaVega (“Big Time Rush”).
Alan Powell, co-writer of the original film and founding member of Christian rock band Anthem Lights, will serve as showrunner. Powell will also write for the series alongside Zuehlsdorff and Kali Bailey. Powell, Vicky Patel and Steve Barnett will executive produce through Monarch Media. Bailey and Elizabeth Yuja are on board as co-executive producers, with Hope Karowski, Paul Becker and Zuehlsdorff producing. Adam Watts will co-produce.
Production is underway at Camp Widjiwagan in Nashville, the same location used for the original film, in collaboration with the Tennessee Entertainment Commission.
Watts, whose music has appeared on more than 50 million albums, will oversee the series’ musical components. His credits include work on the “High School Musical” franchise and Disney’s “Hannah Montana.” He also served as executive music producer on the original “A Week Away” film.
“We received such incredible feedback from families across the country who loved our A Week Away film that it felt natural to revisit it,” Powell said. “We’re excited to reunite this team with an amazing cast and thrilled to have Angel Studios helping bring our hopeful and heartfelt series to even more viewers.”
