Watch: ‘Superman’ Trailer Features Hope, Idealism

Today, DC Studios released the long-awaited first full trailer from its upcoming summer blockbuster “Superman,” directed by James Gunn (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Suicide Squad”). While offering colorful visuals and thrilling action, the first look also teases loftier themes such as geo-political unrest and dissenting voices on what it means to be hero in modern times.

Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and making his debut in 1938, Superman has stood as a symbol for “truth, justice and American way” for decades, in comics, films, and television. As other superheroes evolved and wrestled with social issues since their origin, Superman has frequently stood as an incorruptible ideal of heroism. The new trailer opens with a discussion centering on his simplistic and sincere desire to save lives, putting him at odds with government forces, the public, and even his love interest, Lois Lane. “People were going to die!” he protests as she questions him on a recent unauthorized intervention.

“Your choices, your actions, that’s what makes you who you are,” Jonathan Kent, Superman’s adoptive father and mentor, says in a voiceover.

Some previous interpretations of Superman have painted him as a messianic character, even sacrificing his life for others and coming back to life. It remains to be seen if Gunn’s version will explore this slant or if the hero will simply serve as a symbol of goodness and hope.

“Superman” stars David Corenswet (“Twisters,” “Hollywood”) in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (the “X-Men” movies, “Juror #2”) as Lex Luthor. The film also stars Edi Gathegi (“For All Mankind”), Anthony Carrigan (“Barry,” “Gotham”), Nathan Fillion (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “The Suicide Squad”), Isabela Merced (“Alien Romulus”), Skyler Gisondo (“Licorice Pizza,” “Booksmart”), Sara Sampaio (“At Midnight”), Mariìa Gabriela de Fariìa (“The Moodys”), Wendell Pierce (“Selma,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), Alan Tudyk (“Andor”), Pruitt Taylor Vince (“Bird Box”) and Neva Howell (“Greedy People”).

Behind the camera, Gunn is joined by frequent collaborators, including director of photography Henry Braham, production designer Beth Mickle, costume designer Judianna Makovsky and composer John Murphy, along with composer David Fleming (“The Last of Us”) and editors William Hoy (“The Batman”) and Craig Alpert (“Deadpool 2,” “Blue Beetle”).
