You may have been surprised to watch Survivor last night (Sept. 26) and hear a contestant speaking in “tongues.” Roxy Morris, a seminary student from Brooklyn, in a private moment on the beach, began to pray “in the Spirit,” using what is commonly referred to as glossolalia or “speaking in tongues.” It surprised me, as I’m sure it did other Christians and also viewers who’d never heard it before. Within seconds, Roxy identified herself as a Bible-believing Pentecostal Christian and... Read more

I’m very excited about Warren Barfield’s new record, Redbird. It won’t be out until October but he’s giving a preview by releasing the song “The Time Is Now” online, which is the song I really can’t stop listening to. Warren taps into the idea of being intimidated for standing up for your beliefs. To me, it’s an energizing anthem for not backing down and speaking up. Have you ever felt like everyone wishes you would just be quiet and not... Read more

As children, our inquisitive minds yearned to discover more and more about the world we were born into. We crawled, we walked and then we ran. And our parents tried to keep up. We walked through forests and imagined them to be other planets. We crossed creeks, thinking them to be oceans. And like sponges, our minds soaked in every new experience. Many memories have faded over the years, sometimes causing me to doubt their very existence. Did I dream... Read more

I love sports movies (way more than actually watching the actual games) and this one looks great. The reason it showed up on my radar is because here in Chattanooga, they had open casting calls and it was filmed downtown at the old stadium. Harrison Ford was here, although I’m not sure how much time he spent enjoying the city. I’m definitely going to see it, hoping that I’ll spot some familiar faces. Read more

“No man is an island entire of itself.”—John Donne One of the key reasons leaders fail is isolation and insulation, shutting out the others who can assist and enhance your leadership. When pride tells a person that he or she is self-sufficient, trouble is looming. To that end, Leonard Sweet takes aim at the concept of “Lone Ranger” leadership in his book 11 Indispensable Relationships You Can’t Be Without. Combing through biblical stories, Sweet discovers 11 models of relationships that... Read more

Back when he was promoting Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone spoke to Christian media about the film. I participated in a conference call and he shared about his faith and some points about being connected to a church. I’ve referenced them before so I wanted to share them here:  “Without the church, it’s like having a boat without a rudder. All my life I’ve been involved with exercise. I know a lot about the body, but you need help. You need... Read more

Today is National Drive-In Day. If you haven’t seen today’s Google animation, you need to check it out (be sure to click play). To me, drive-ins are like a step back in time. I associate them with my favorite film, Grease, and the song “Sandy” that John Travolta croons swinging in front of vintage cartoon commercials (I remember being so irritated with him that he was messing up such a good relationship with Sandy by doing all the wrong things). You... Read more

I just wrote this for our magazine’s new blog. It summarizes some of the ideas I heard about last week during the EPA 2012 conference. Check it out by clicking on the title link: White Wing Messenger Blog: DeWayne: My Takeaways from EPA 2012: How do you take a tried-and-true, consistent print brand and not only preserve its legacy but ensure its durability well into the future? … Read more
