Beth Mardutho Fellowships in the Syriac Digital Humanities and Syriac Language Courses 2020

Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute [www.bethmardutho.org] announces six Digital Humanities Fellowships and two Syriac language courses to be offered in the summer of 2020.

Digital Humanities Fellowships

The Institute invites graduate students and recent graduates to apply for Digital Humanities Fellowships. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on the Institute’s projects including the newly launched Simtho Syriac Thesaurus [simtho.bethmardutho.org] including computational tagging of texts, the Syriac Electronic-Data Research Archive [sedra.bethmardutho.org], the Qoruyo project for developing models for Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and developing the eBethArke online library.

Candidates must have done at least one year of Syriac, are enrolled in a graduate program (Master or Ph.D.), or are recent graduates. Non-academic candidates from within the Syriac-using tradition who know Classical Syriac are also encouraged to apply and will be introduced to the world of Syriac academia.

The successful candidates will receive a stipend that can be used towards accommodation or travel, a Gorgias press book grant, and free admission to the summer Syriac course program (Syriac II described below). Successful candidates may choose to complete the Fellowship (12 weeks during May-August) at the Institute or, if travel is prohibitive, at their current institution provided that they are available daily during the term of the Fellowship via Skype.

The Fellowships are possible due to generous donations of individuals after whom we named the fellowships (in alphabetical order):

  • The Dr. Nebil and Mrs. Jennifer Aydin Fellowship
  • The Dr. Khalid and Mrs. Amira Dinno Fellowship
  • The Dr. Talal and Mrs. Wesal Findakly Fellowship
  •      The Edward Y. Hannoush Memorial Fellowship (sponsored by Dr. Peter and Dr. Gretchen Hannoush)
  • The Mr. Malak & Mrs. Samira Yunan and Dr. Evelyn Yunan Fellowship
  • The Dr. Suhail H. and Mrs. Luna  Zavaro Fellowship

Interested candidates should send a cover letter and CV to [email protected].

Syriac Language Summer School

The Syriac Institute holds annual courses teaching the Syriac language (beginners and intermediate). Syriac I (Introduction to Syriac) is for students with no prior experience in Syriac. They will learn introductory reading, writing, grammar, and should be able to translate introductory texts including passages from the Syriac Peshitta Bible by the end of the course with the help of a dictionary.

Syriac II (Intermediate-Advanced Syriac). This course is geared towards students who have already done Syriac and would like to dig deeper into the grammar and nuances of the language. Each day we read texts and go through the grammar of Coakley-Robinson, translating from Syriac to English as well as from English to Syriac.
