“One of Us” focuses on the story of Juliette and how she came to the island. Juliette, left behind by the Others, is taken along by Jack against Sayid’s objections. When they are alone, Sayid asks Juliette who “you people” are and why they make lists, kidnap children, and terrorize people, as well as who she is individually. Juliette tells Sayid that if she told him who she was and what she knows, he would kill her. In flashbacks we... Read more

The title of this post refers to the class called “Heresy,” which I am teaching this semester. We had a wonderful and interesting conversation in a recent class, on the subject of ideas about an afterlife, based on one of the readings for that class period, which was the Apocalypse of Peter. We discussed notions of retribution and the reasons why ideas of an afterlife had developed in the first place. We discussed the possibility for an afterlife to add meaning to this life... Read more

In a flashback, Kate helps Cassidy avoid having the police called when she tries to scam someone at a gas station. Kate is calling herself Lucy. When asked why she chose that name, Kate mentions it being a saint’s name, and having learned them all in Sunday school. It is interesting that Kate justifies having killed her stepfather by saying that he was a bad guy. The Others talk about some people in the same way. Kate wants to see... Read more

Tertullian claims that the Acts of Paul and Thecla were forged in his time, and that a particular individual confessed to having done so. In the past, I’ve been willing to accept Tertullian’s account. But I am beginning to think that perhaps I should treat Tertullian’s claim with a greater degree of skepticism. One reason for rethinking my view of this is the fact that the Acts of Paul and Thecla seem to so closely mirror what we find being... Read more

This is really the only episode in which Nikki and Paolo are at all the focus. It is strange to recall how much fans spoke about them and were annoyed by the alleged prominence given to them. They actually feature very little, and are no more of a focus than Artz and other characters who are introduced, remain a few episodes, and then feature before being killed. The episode is actually a comical one, in which Nikki is an actress,... Read more

In a post on the blog Right Reason, Glenn Peoples seeks to make the case that Paul quotes from the Gospel of Luke. The reference is to the connection between 1 Timothy 5:17–18 and Luke 10:7. If one were to make the case that the Pastoral Epistles were by Paul, despite the implausibility, then it could still be a case of Paul remembering a saying of Jesus and blurring it with what the Jewish Scriptures said. After all, Jesus was a Jewish teacher, and... Read more

In flashbacks, a man named Peter Talbot goes to see John Locke, concerned about a man whom his mother is marrying. Locke’s father, Anthony Cooper, is now going by a different name, and had married Peter’s mother. Peter found him because of the record of the kidney donation. Locke pretends it was an anonymous donation and says he cannot help him. But Locke finds his father and tells him that he will not let him pretend to be someone’s family... Read more

I have been getting the sense that I am not alone among iPad users in having had my e-mail suddenly stop working. I suspect that it is somehow connected with the upgrade to iOS 8.1.3. It tries to load, and then goes blank. The built-in mail app had been crashing quite often even before the upgrade, since I am on an iPad 2 and iOS as well as various specific apps have continued to evolve in ways that leave this device... Read more
