In response to my recent posts about sharing, it was pointed out that Delicious also allows for the public sharing of links. And so I have created a Delicious account, using the same nickname as I use on Twitter, ReligionProf, and will share things there for those who may prefer that format. UPDATE: You should be able to add my shared items from Delicious to your RSS feed reader, to replace the one from The Old Reader. The feed address... Read more

I mentioned needing a replacement for TheOldReader. I am going to give Feedly a try – it looks promising. The main thing it lacks is the ability to share select posts to an RSS feed. But I think there is a solution which may be acceptable to those who've enjoyed that sidebar or RSS feature. Feedly makes it very easy to share things to Twitter and Facebook. And so to replace the sidebar, I can share things to Twitter, and/or... Read more

It sounds as though the enterprising individuals who created The Old Reader didn’t anticipate just how popular their creation would be, and just how much work it would take to maintain it. And so they will be eliminating their public site and most of the accounts soon. And so once again, I find myself in need of a replacement for my current RSS feed reader. This was my last, best hope at having an RSS reader which was accessible through... Read more

A post about philosophy and humor appeared on 3quarksdaily. It included this famous bit of humor: There is a well-known joke about Talmudic interpretation. A Jew is talking to his Rabbi. Rabbi,” the man said, “Explain the Talmud to me.” “Very well,” he said. “First, I will ask you a question. If two men climb up a chimney and one comes out dirty, and one comes out clean, which one washes himself?” “The dirty one,” answers the man. “No. They... Read more

On Facebook, in response to my post about the “Galileo Gambit,” Dudley Chapman recalled a saying to the effect that they laughed at Galileo and they laughed at Thomas Edison, but they also laughed at Bozo the Clown. I’ve found that quote in several places around the internet. Dudley added “The job of science is to figure out who is Edison and who is Bozo.” That may or may not be his own addition, but it makes a good point.... Read more

A nice explanation of twelve tone music (serialism) by Vi Hart. It is highly entertaining in its own right, with a healthy dose of sci-fi geekiness, in addition to being an insightful and clear explanation of this distinctive development in 20th century music. And if you do not appreciate this sort of music, please give this a listen – it might change your mind. It has an incredible twelve-tone version of Mary Had a Little Lamb, and great use of... Read more

I received an e-mail recently from someone whom I banned for trollish behavior, which seemed to me to be wasting the time of not only myself, but also other commenters. The individual in question was demonstrably dishonest, and refused to interact with evidence. The e-mail illustrates the same persistent claim or belief that the individual in question had presented evidence for their own viewpoint, and that others had not adequately responded, when the reverse is true. I’m not sure whether... Read more
