No, this blog post is not asking about my opponents. It is to mention that a book to which I contributed, Who Do My Opponents Say That I Am?: An Investigation of the Accusations Against the Historical Jesus (Library of New Testament Studies), is now available as an ebook. At present it is only available in those formats (epub and pdf) from the publisher’s website, but I presume that eventually you’ll be able to get the ebook from Amazon and other... Read more
As a follow-up to my post from earlier today about atheism and the meaning of “god” I thought I would offer here some further thoughts that I also shared in comments on that post. If someone objects to calling something or someone a “god” because that is not an accepted use of that word in English, that is a linguistic point. But if you say “that isn’t really a god” about a view with a long established history of such... Read more
AWOL mentioned a new open-access journal, BABELAO, which is an abbreviation for « Bulletin de l’Académie Belge pour l’Etude des Langues Anciennes et Orientales.» Articles include one by J. K. Elliott on textual criticism and another by Thomas Durant on the organization of Thomas Christians in the pre-colonial period. Read more

OK, so the title is intentionally provocative. But it seems to me that atheism can actually be disproved – depending, of course, on what you mean by “atheism.” Pantheists view the world, the cosmos, as divine, as God. And no atheist denies the existence of the cosmos. Ergo, at least one sort of “God” exists. I’m being a bit sarcastic here. But hopefully this highlights a key issue related to the definition of atheism, which goes hand in hand with... Read more
The scripture reading in church on Sunday was from Psalm 24. Since the invention of the iPad made it so much more convenient to do so, I've been trying to read along in the original languages whenever possible. I was really struck when I saw that in the midst of a psalm with many mentions of Yahweh in the third person, there is what most naturally seems to be a second person address to Jacob: מְבַקְשֵׁי פָנֶיךָ יַעֲקֹב While most... Having provided enough amusing information literacy song videos, my colleague Chad Bauman and I are moving into a new genre: amusing song videos about religion. The above is the first in the genre, “Mennonites, Mormons, and Moonies,” with lyrics by Chad Bauman, and performed in four-part harmony by Chad Bauman, Chad Bauman, Chad Bauman, and Chad Bauman. Its melody is familiar, and its lyrics will help you keep from getting these faith traditions confused. Enjoy! In case you’re curious, I’ve... Read more
