Below are the papers that have already been placed on the program of the ARAM conference on the Mandaeans, which will be held in Oxford in July, including my own. I expect that there will be still more before the program is finalized. If you do research that is related to the Mandaeans, and have not yet submitted a paper proposal, please do so! Conferences dedicated to this area are rare, and I can tell you from my experience at... Read more

I found myself wondering recently whether the necessary components for a mass in rock style are available. Below are songs which have the right titles and are not a world away in their themes. But are there other songs, and ones perhaps more suited for this purpose, than the ones below? I wonder what it would be like to try incorporating these into a worship service. And would there be any interest in someone writing an actual rock mass? Or... Read more

It shows how hectic things have been lately that I had not mentioned the decision of Pope Benedict here on my blog to resign until now. And even now, all I have to offer are a few tidbits of Star Wars humor related to the subject… And as Joel Watts shows, one doesn't need to limit it to Star Wars. There are also lots of Star Wars Valentines out there, some wonderful, some awful. Which are these?   Read more

Tonight was the first time I’ve experienced Ash Wednesday celebrated at a Baptist church. My own church, Crooked Creek Baptist Church, was the host to an interfaith Ash Wednesday service, a multi-congregation and multi-denomination celebration, featuring our own Rev. Tom Bartley as well as Rev. L. Bryant Parker of Witherspoon Presbyterian, Rev. Kevin Bausman of Immanuel Presbyterian, and Pastors Ryan Algrim and Shannon Dycus from the First Mennonite Church, among others. Musicians and other members of these congregations shared parts of... Read more

Several blogs have focused in on the subject of liberal and/or progressive Christianity since I posted on the topic a couple of days ago. Bo Sanders argues that Liberal and Progressive are terms that need to be distinguished, with the latter being more postmodern, among other things. Tony Jones asked whether he fits into Roger Olson’s category of “Liberal Christian.” Roger Olson followed up by posting on the definition of fundamentalism. Bruce Gerencser asks a “what if” question – what if... Read more

As I will be taking over as chair of the Blogger and Online Publication Society of Biblical Literature program unit, let me highlight this year’s call for papers. There have been a lot of ways in which blogging has impacted the scholarly realm in recent years, and vice versa. Lots of them deserve to be highlighted, analysed, reflected on, and discussed, in the manner that we do with other topics in our conference papers. Here’s the CFP: BLOGGER AND ONLINE... Read more

Adam Kotsko has posted an economic retelling of the Genesis 1 creation account on his blog. Here is how it begins: In the beginning, God created the wealth and the jobs. Now the wealth was a formless void and darkness covered the sources of value, while the spirit of capitalism hovered over the depths. And then God said, “Let there be jobs,” and there were jobs. And God saw that the jobs were not very good; and God separated the... Read more
